Being an hypocritical vegetarian, aka "trying new things, ep.2"
Those of you who know me will nod when I write this: "2011 has been a shitty, shitty year", so when 2012 came around the corner, I didn't want to make any resolutions (I'm just like everybody else and I never keep them) but I didn't want 2012 to just be another shitty year. Although it'd be very hard to trump 2011 on that level, I couldn't take any chances. I knew I needed to try new things in the year to come.
And then I had another drink, screamed another "Happy New Year!!!!" took another few pictures with these funny glasses, looked again at the view from this 35th floor NYC apartment and went on with the party.
The monday after that I went back to the office and found myself buying "Four Cheese Lasagna" instead of meat-based sandwiches. And another day I did the same, and the same, and the same (although rest assured it wasn't only four cheese lasagna!!). Sooner or later, a week had passed and I only ate chicken once in that week. I had met my challenge: what if, I decided to only eat meat once a week?
A week passed and I kept on forgetting if I had meat that week already or not so ended up eating none. And now it's been pretty much 3 weeks into 2012 and I voluntarily had a veggie burger yesterday instead of a regular burger; reasons: veggie burgers are delicious (this one was just okay) and regular meat on the menu was way too expensive.
Which leads to why I call this post "the hypocritical vegetarian". I've tried vegetarian in the past. Whenever people would asked me why, the only reason I could come up with was "I dunno, I guess I wanted to try"... Which usually wouldn't fly in my circle of friends and acquaintances.
There are many reasons why I do no eat meat now (well, in the last 3 weeks) and why globally I've never been that big of a carnivore.
First off, meat is not THAT good. Maybe I haven't had that good and juicy meat that you always seem to remember each time you order a burger.
Secondly, ever since I moved to the states, my meat consumption has decreased dramatically. Remember I moved here as a student. A poor student. I came from France. I came here and all the meat my budget could buy me looked grosser than 3 days leftover Chinese food. There was no way I was eating that or if I did, it HAD to be well well done, which was tasteless. So the first 2 years in the US in a word prepared me for this situation.
Health. I don't know if it's because the meat I ended up eating was not the best on the market or because it really is true but I always felt healthier when I would go on meat strikes. And I'd lose weight too. Maybe it was just psychological because of all the green stuff I would intake (hint: vegetables) and your mom always say "eat all your vegetables it's good for you" but never "eat all of your meat it's good for you".
Money. Money can't buy a lot of things, love is included but it also looks like in this country, MY money can't buy me good meat either. This goes back to point number 2. I don't want to spend all my money on good meat where I could spend it on clothes, drinks, meatless dinners and savings account. It is just not worth it.
So some "true" vegetarians out there will maybe think that I don't care about animals. Well it's not that I don't, it's just that I don't think that ME going vegetarian will change anything.
All I know is that now it makes sense, I don't crave it, and it's something that 2012 has that 2011 didn't have. And that makes it a major point, the wider the gap between these two years the better. Vegetarian, promotion, what's next?
